Build the smallest useful index

An index should help you find, not classify everything.

Process flows · Original writing

A notebook becomes difficult to revisit when every page looks equally important. Before redesigning it, try adding a small index of the things you actually search for.

Choose five recurring needs: decisions, useful references, open questions, or sketches you want to continue. Record a page number and a short description for each relevant entry. You do not need to catalogue every sentence.

After a week, check which labels helped you find something. Remove labels that only looked tidy. Add a category when a real search reveals its absence.

The index serves your use of the notebook. If maintaining it begins to take more effort than finding the pages, reduce it. A small map with a clear purpose can be more useful than a complete map nobody consults.
