Write the recipe change in the margin

Remember what you actually changed, not just how dinner felt.

Food · Original writing

A meal turns out differently, and you are sure you will remember why. A week later, the extra ingredient is easy to recall but its amount and timing are gone.

Keep a small margin note beside a familiar recipe. Describe one change in plain terms: what you added, omitted, or prepared differently. Add a sentence about the result, using a concrete detail such as texture or balance.

Avoid turning a single meal into a universal rule. Ingredients, equipment, and preferences vary. A useful note says what happened in this attempt, not what every cook should do.

On the next attempt, decide whether to repeat that change or test something else. You are building a conversation with a recipe, rather than a scorecard. Leave enough room for the version someone else at the table prefers.
