A Question for the Quiet Bench

A short story about listening without pretending to know.

Read together · Original writing

Asha asked the bench what it had seen that day. The bench did not answer.

She imagined a marching band, a visiting elephant, and a baker carrying a tower of buns. Her brother laughed.

Then they looked carefully. There was a small leaf on the seat and a wet mark beneath it. They could see those things, even though they could not know who had sat there.

Asha wrote two headings on her page: What we noticed and What we imagined.

The elephant went under the second heading. The leaf went under the first. Both had a place in her story.

Pause & wonder

Which detail belongs to noticing, and which to imagining?
