Every Tuesday, Ivo visited the library for lost words. One shelf held “almost.” Another held “perhaps.” The lowest shelf was empty. Its label said “a word we have not found yet.”
Ivo asked the librarian what belonged there. “A word for being happy for your friend and a little sad for yourself at the same time,” she said. “Perhaps someone already has one. We are still looking.”
Ivo knew that feeling. His friend had won a drawing contest, and his own picture had not been chosen. He had clapped loudly and then felt very quiet.
He wrote his feeling on a card. The librarian placed it on the empty shelf. “Now we have somewhere to start,” she said. On the way home, Ivo asked his friend to show him how she drew trees.
