The yellow sock had lost its partner. “I cannot be a pair,” it said. Jo turned it over in her hands. “What else could you be?”
They tried a tiny blanket for a toy mouse. Too long. A hat for a wooden spoon. Too floppy. Then Jo put her hand inside and made the sock bow.
“Hello,” said the sock, in a very serious voice. Jo’s little brother laughed. He found two paper circles for eyes and held them in place while Jo drew.
The sock became a puppet called Captain Almost. It still did not know where its partner was. It had a new question to ask the audience: what could we try next?
