The Story That Forgot Its Middle

The story began with a mouse in a yellow hat. It ended with a picnic. In the middle, there was nothing at all.

The mouse looked down the empty page. I cannot jump that far, she said.

The writer added a path. Then a gate. Then a friend carrying apples.

Now the mouse had someone to walk with and a reason to reach the picnic. She took off her hat and used it to carry one apple.

The writer did not fill every space. A few useful things were enough to connect the beginning to the end.
