“Why do you wave?” Ada asked the tree. The tree did not answer with words. Its leaves rustled above her.
Ada felt air move across her face. She watched a branch bend and return. “Perhaps the wind is moving you,” she said.
She sat beneath the tree with a notebook. An ant crossed a root. A bird landed on a branch. Ada drew both. Each drawing gave her another question.
When it was time to go, Ada said, “You are a very quiet teacher.” The tree rustled once more. Ada did not know whether it liked questions. She knew that she did.
