An original practical exercise from The Byte N. Start with an everyday situation and adapt it to your context.
Ask for the right moment
Check whether the other person has time and energy. A thoughtful question can wait for a better moment.
Listen for the need
Let them finish. Ask whether they want listening, ideas, or practical help; do not assume all three.
Check what you heard
Say what you understood and invite correction. Leave space for their meaning to differ from yours.
Offer one honest action
Offer something you can actually do. Respect a no, and respect your own limits too. Care does not require agreeing to everything.
