The envelope marked Tomorrow

A letter waits for a date nobody can quite choose.

Fiction · Original fiction

The envelope lay on the hall table with one word on it: Tomorrow. Every morning, Arun moved it aside to make room for the keys. Every evening, he thought the word meant the next day.

When the table was repaired, the carpenter asked where to put it. Arun opened the envelope at last. Inside was a drawing of the table, made by his sister before she moved away. Beneath it she had written, Tell me what you keep here now.

He took a sheet of paper and drew the keys, a library card, and an envelope. The last object made him smile. He wrote a reply that evening, then changed the word on the outside to Today.
