The club’s checklist said to place an empty box beside the door before every event. Nobody remembered why. Ada found the box in the cupboard and set it down as instructed.
A new volunteer asked what belonged inside. “Nothing,” Ada said. “It is on the list.” They looked through old photographs. In one, the box held umbrellas. In another, a child sat inside it wearing a paper crown.
The founder remembered buying it for wet umbrellas on a rainy opening night. The club now had a proper umbrella stand.
Ada crossed out the instruction and wrote: check whether guests have a place for wet coats and umbrellas. The next event was dry, but the one after that was not. The volunteer found a rack before anyone had to ask.
The box became a home for craft paper. For the first time in years, it was useful for a reason everyone understood.

How did remembering the purpose improve the instruction?
