The label on the empty box

A box marked “for later” becomes an invitation to begin.

Creativity · Original writing

The box had arrived empty. No packing paper, no receipt, just two words written neatly across the lid: for later. Sera put it under the table and forgot about it until a rainy afternoon when she was looking for scissors.

She placed a half-finished postcard inside. Then a drawing she had abandoned because the bird looked like a potato. Then a ticket from an exhibition she had meant to write about. The box filled with small beginnings.

A week later, Sera opened it looking for the postcard. Her brother was visiting. He picked up the drawing. “That is a very confident potato,” he said. She laughed for the first time all morning.

They added a hat to the bird, then a small suitcase. By evening it had a destination and a name. Sera put the new drawing on the wall.

The box went back beneath the table. She crossed out for later and wrote possible starts. It still held unfinished things. They looked different now.
