Iris recorded the same phrase seven times. In the eighth take, the notes finally settled where she wanted them. Then a spoon fell in the kitchen.
She sighed and reached for the delete button. From the other room, her father called, “Tea?”
Iris played the recording again. The spoon landed just after the final chord. It sounded less like an interruption now and more like the room returning after holding its breath.
She kept that take and recorded another without the spoon. For a week she preferred the clean version. On Sunday, working in a quiet room somewhere else, she found herself choosing the other one.
When she sent it to a friend, she included a note: the final sound is not percussion. Her friend replied that it had made him picture a kitchen he had never seen. Iris went home and put the kettle on.
