The pebble with three names

Three friends look at one pebble and notice three different things.

Stories · Original writing

El called the pebble Moon because it was round. Sami called it Boat because it curved at one end. Ruth called it Scratch because a white line crossed its middle.

They argued about which name was right. Then Ruth turned the pebble over. A second white line appeared. “Now it is Crossroads,” she said.

Sami drew every side on a page. El wrote the names beneath the drawings. They could see why each person had chosen differently.

They left the pebble where they had found it and took the page home. At the top they wrote ONE PEBBLE, MANY NOTICINGS. There was still an empty space for the next name.

Try a little activity

Draw one ordinary object from two sides and give each view a different name.

Pause & wonder

Did the pebble change, or did the friends’ view change?
